Andrzej Sapkowski (born in Łódź, 1948) is a renowned Polish author and economist by profession. Fluent in several foreign languages, he worked in foreign trade between 1972 and 1994. His writing career began in 1986 with the publication of his first short story The Witcher (Wiedźmin) in the Polish fantasy magazine Fantastyka. Just two years later, he was voted the best Polish fantasy short story writer by the magazine's readers.

Sapkowski is best known for creating the iconic fantasy world of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a Witcher. His acclaimed work includes three short story collections — The Witcher, The Last Wish (Ostatnie życzenia), and Sword of Destiny (Miecz przeznaczenia) — which introduce readers to the universe and key characters. These stories are followed by the epic five-book Witcher Saga:

  1. Blood of Elves (Krew elfów)

  2. Time of Contempt (Czas pogardy)

  3. Baptism of Fire (Chrzest ognia)

  4. The Tower of the Swallow (Wieża Jaskółki)

  5. The Lady of the Lake (Pani Jeziora)

Sapkowski's Witcher series has achieved worldwide fame, inspiring video games, comic books, and the popular Netflix TV series. These books are a must-read for fans of dark fantasy, complex world-building, and morally nuanced heroes.
