Do Oxen Low When Mangers Are Full? is a landmark of Ukrainian realist literature, co-authored by Panas Myrny and Ivan Bilyk. Set in the village of Pisky, the novel chronicles nearly a century of societal transformation, from the fall of the Zaporozhian Sich to the Emancipation Reform of 1861.
The story follows Chypka Varanychenko, a peasant whose life spirals from hope to despair amidst systemic injustice and personal turmoil. Through Chypka's journey, the novel explores themes of morality, social inequality, and the human capacity for both good and evil.
Originally published in 1880, the novel faced censorship in the Russian Empire and was first printed in Geneva. It remains a powerful critique of autocracy and a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit.
