If One Day We Return is a stirring tale of survival, identity and transformation. In the early 1920s a young Spanish woman assuming the name Cecilia Belmonte arrives in Oran – an Algerian port city shaped by Arab origins, Spanish influence and French colonial rule.
She is ostensibly seeking to escape poverty like so many who crossed the Mediterranean. Yet her real reason for the journey is far darker: she flees an involuntary crime, the men who rejected her, and the war she left behind.

In Oran, Cecilia’s path is harsh. She labours in plantations, laundries, works as a domestic and factory worker in labour‐intensive jobs, pushed by necessity. One night in the Bastos tobacco factory she becomes implicated in a crime, and the consequences lead her into the control of a reprehensible man. From this dramatic nadir she must summon incredible resilience to climb back, reinventing herself through decades of turmoil, opportunity and exile.

Set against the backdrop of the colonial French Algeria and the Spanish “pieds‐noirs” diaspora, this novel maps three vibrant decades of a woman’s struggle and transformation. It vividly evokes the labour‐economy frameworks, the migration narratives and the shadow of war and empire.

With 544 pages, the hardback edition published in 2025 by Editorial Planeta spans both geography and emotion: from the Mediterranean crossing to the factories of Oran, from personal redemption to historical upheaval. Readers who appreciated Dueñas’s earlier works will find this one delivers her signature blend of immersive setting, compelling female voice and sweeping historical panorama.
