Senior Boyar. Plan to the Courtyard is a dual narrative by Ukrainian writer Todos Osmachka that weaves together love, injustice, and the erosion of traditional life under political pressure. In Senior Boyar, a seminary student Gordiy Lundyk falls in love with Varka, who is promised to another — a tale set in a rural Ukraine under subtle pressure from “landlordism with Moscow leanings.” Plan to the Courtyard is a semi-autobiographical account of how Soviet authorities expelled well-off peasants, confiscating property and dispossessing families by sheer force. Both stories explore the fragility of home, the cruelty of power, and the moral choices faced by ordinary people when ideology turns personal.
