Taras Bulba is a stirring and tragic tale by Mykola Hohol (also known as Nikolai Gogol), set in the 16th-17th century among the Cossack communities of Ukraine. The story follows the seasoned Cossack leader Taras Bulba and his two sons, Ostap and Andriy, as they engage in battles, blood feuds, and personal conflicts of loyalty and betrayal. After a period away, Andriy falls in love with a Polish noblewoman and abandons his heritage, spurring a hatred from his father. The novel is filled with vivid descriptions of steppe life, heroism, loyalty to the homeland, and the conflict between personal passion and duty. This edition is a Ukrainian translation based on the first 1835 version of the tale, which differs significantly from the later canonical version.
