"Toreadors from Vasyukivka" is a beloved Ukrainian children's novel by Vsevolod Nestaiko, often hailed as the "Gogol of modern Ukrainian children's literature." The story follows the humorous and adventurous escapades of two village boys, Pavlo ("Pavlushа") and Yavhen ("Yavа"), as they embark on imaginative endeavors such as constructing a subway under a pigsty and staging a bullfight with a cow named "Contribution." Their misadventures lead them to a deserted island, a self-built submarine, and various school pranks, all set against the backdrop of the picturesque Ukrainian countryside. This edition, prepared by the author's daughter, Olena Maksymenko, includes episodes added in 2004 and restores original character names and dialogues to reflect the initial authorial intent. Recognized internationally, the novel has been translated into twenty languages and was included in the Andersen Honorary List as one of the outstanding works of children's literature.
