Interview with Iryna Hrabovska: On Fantasy Creativity and Ukrainian Literature

Iryna Hrabovska
is a Ukrainian writer known for her fantasy works, including the "Leoburg" duology and the "Castle of Crystal" trilogy. We spoke with her about her creative journey, the specifics of the fantasy genre, and the state of Ukrainian literature.

— Ms. Hrabovska, your "Castle of Crystal" series is classified as sword and sorcery fantasy. How do you define this genre, and how is it implemented in your trilogy?

— Sword and sorcery fantasy focuses on the adventures of a hero, often a warrior, in a world where magic exists. In my trilogy, there is a struggle for the throne, knightly tournaments, epic battles, and magical elements. However, the series also has features of dark fantasy, as it addresses grim themes of war, violence, and moral dilemmas.

— It's known that you initially wrote a historical novel about Jean de Montfort and events in 14th-century Brittany. Why did you decide to switch to fantasy?

— I wrote that novel quite a while ago, and at that time, it was difficult to publish a work in Ukrainian, especially on such a specific topic. Later, I decided to adapt this plot into a fantasy world, which gave me more creative freedom.

— How do you assess the current state of Ukrainian literature, particularly fantasy?

— There is currently a growing interest in Ukrainian literature, especially after the restriction of Russian book imports. Publishers have become more open to new authors, and this is a great opportunity for writers to make themselves known.

— What themes do you consider important in your works?

— I am interested in questions of morality, the choice between good and evil, and the internal conflicts of characters. Themes of war, power, and personal responsibility are also important.

— What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

— Write and don't be afraid to send your works to publishers. There is a need for new authors in Ukraine, and if your work is of high quality, it will definitely find its reader.

— Where can readers find your books?

— My books are available on your store's website. Here is the link: Iryna Hrabovska's Books
