Panteleimon Kulish wrote his first novel at just 23 years old, inspired by his studies in Ukrainian history and the works of Walter Scott. Mykhailo Charnyshenko, or Ukraine Eighty Years Ago is considered the first Ukrainian historical adventure novel.

Set in the second half of the 18th century — during the decline of the Hetmanate — the novel weaves together dynamic action, romantic drama, tragic fates, and intense moral dilemmas. The story follows the titular character as he navigates a world where tradition clashes with change and where every choice can alter one's destiny.
