The Vindobon Apocryph is the debut novel by Ukrainian poet Kateryna Devdera. Set in the late 19th century, the story follows Marta Kravchenko, a Ukrainian aristocrat and painter, as she navigates her passion for art and love. Her journey takes her from Kyiv to Vienna, the Carpathians, and Podillia, intertwining personal growth with historical and cultural contexts.
The narrative is enriched by Marta's relationships with sculptor Anna, her cousin Dr. Antoniy, and the enigmatic artist Stefan Lupul. Through these connections, the novel explores themes of identity, creativity, and the societal roles of women in the fin de siècle period.
Devdera's poetic prose weaves truth and fiction, much like an apocryph, offering readers a lyrical and introspective experience.
