The City (Misto) is a landmark work of Ukrainian modernist literature by Valerian Pidmohylnyi. Set in 1920s Kyiv, it follows Stepan Radchenko, a young man from the countryside who comes to the city chasing education, success, and self-realization. As Stepan ascends socially and intellectually, he grapples with ambition, moral compromise, and alienation in an urban world. Through psychological depth and vivid realism, The City portrays the tension between rural traditions and urban modernity in the early Soviet era.
